The Southeast Asian Art Residencies Meeting 2018 was held from 20 – 22 April 2018 in Lohas city, Cyprus, the Philippines. Artist-in-residence organisers from Southeast Asia (the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Singapore) and East Asia (Korea, Taiwan, Japan) participated in this conference. ⁽¹⁾

This conference was held as a related project of VIVA EXCON 2018 in Capiz ⁽²⁾. By the way, the first meeting is held in Rimbun Dahan ⁽³⁾ in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2016.

The themes discussed at this year’s meeting are as follows.

• State of Affairs: surveying the landscape and contexts of participating spaces and organizations
• Building Structures: examining conceptual and operational formats and frameworks
• Action and Opportunities: partnering and collaborating with international institutions within specific contexts
• Liquid Infrastructures: inquiries on the potentials for community engagement and participation）
• Sustainability and Resilience: inspecting the different junctures in creating and maintaining residency programs

Each participant is supposed to make a presentation by the theme that seems to be related at the request of the organiser, but in fact, it is mainly about the background of the organisation and the aspect of the residence I was able to know the concrete activities of AIR. At the end of the meeting, a roundtable group discussion was held. I exchanged views with various participants till late every day, it was a thrilling three days that kept talking all the time. ⁽⁴⁾

1. Japanese participants were AIR-H (Aomori), Art Center Ongoing (Tokyo), FIGYA (Osaka), Art Space Tetra (Fukuoka), Koganecho Area Management Center (Kanagawa) and Arcus Project (Ibaraki).
   
2. VIVA EXCON (Visayas Islands Visual Arts Exhibition and Conference) is an Art Biennial in the Visayas region, Philippines, which has been held since 1990. It will be held in November in 2018 at LOHAS city in Capiz.

   The reason why I participated in this conference because I was attending as a facilitator of the workshop hosted by VIVA EXCON at the same venue just before this point.

東南アジア・アートレジデンシー・ミーティング

2018年4月20日ー22日にThe Southeast Asian Art Residencies Meeting 2018がフィリピン・カプス州ロハス市で開催された。東南アジア（フィリピン・マレーシア・インドネシア・タイ・ベトナム・香港・シンガポール）および東アジア（韓国・台湾・日本）のアーティストインレジデンス運営者がこのカンファレンスに参加。⁽¹⁾

この会議はVIVA EXCON 2018 in Capiz⁽²⁾の関連事業として開催された。ちなみに、第一回の会議は2016年にマレーシア・クアラルンプールのRimbun Dahan⁽³⁾で開催されている。

今年の会議で議論されたテーマは以下のとおり。

• 現状：各参加者組織の背景や現状、および活動状況の調査
• 組織作り：コンセプトおよび運用形式と枠組みの検討
• 行為と機会：限られた状況での国際的な組織への参加と協力
• 流動的基盤整備：コミュニティとの関わりと参加の可能性
• 持続性と回復力：AIRプログラムの構築と維持についての様々な接点の検証

各参加者は主催者からの要望で、関連が深いと思われるテーマに沿った内容でプレゼンテーションを行うことになっているが、実際には組織の背景やレジデンスの様子に関することが中心で、各AIRの具体的な活動を知ることができた。また会議の最後にラウンドテーブル形式のグループディスカッションが行われた。毎日遅くまで色々な人と意見交換をし、ずっと喋りっぱなしのスリリングな3日間だった。⁽⁴⁾

2. VIVA EXCON（Visayas Islands Visual Arts Exhibition and Conference）は、1990年から催されているフィリピン・ビサヤ地域のビエンナーレ／芸術祭。今年はカピス州ロハス市で11月開催。

About the past fifteen years, I focused mainly on child rearing and family,  and there was a slightly harsh situation about my artworks. My son became a junior high school third grader, tying a little over the rebellious pass. Someday my wife’s job has stabilised and decided to list his work consciously.

Sabbatical, five years ago, was a leave feel for the whole family, and in London where my wife was a student, my son also learned all year long at the international school was a big goal. In that sense, as a researcher, we could not have been satisfied with just a little digestion.

So, I decided to come alone to the Philippines this time. My wife also has my job, and my son is studying at school, so I am happy with the basketball club.

My interest is changing a bit more than before. The career as a university faculty member is getting much longer. In addition to achievements and research as an artist, it is my problem whether I can offer better programs than university students and universities.

この15年くらいは子育てや家族のことが中心で、自分自身の仕事に関してはちょっと厳しい状況があった。息子が中学3年生になり、しかも反抗期の峠をやや過ぎたタイイング。且つ妻の仕事が安定してきたということもあって、自分の仕事を意識的にリスタートさせることにした。

5年前のサバティカルは、家族全体にとってのサバティカルという感じで、妻が学生時代を過ごしたロンドンで、息子がインターナショナルスクールで一年間学ぶことが大きな目的でもあった。そういう意味で、研究者としてはやや消化ふ不良で物足りなかったのかもしれない。

なので、今回はフィリピンに一人でくることにした。妻も自分の仕事があり、息子も勉強のことはともかく学校の部活で、バスケ部を楽しくやっている。

私の興味は以前とは少し変わってきている。大学教員としてのキャリアもずいぶんと長くなってきている。アーティストとしての成果や研究に加え、大学で学生や大学によりよいプログラムを提供できるのかということが今の課題。

 

 

From April I will stay as a visiting researcher at Department of Art Studiesthe University of the Philippine for one year. Last year I decided to ask this university who finally pulled around a lot of universities a lot.,

I stay at Balay Kalinaw on the campus. Although it is slightly expensive, the Internet is outstanding. In the Philippines everyone said that the Internet environment is the hardest thing to do, so I stop looking for others for the time being, for a while.

4月からフィリピン大学芸術学部に客員研究員として一年間滞在することになりました。去年ずいぶんたくさんの大学を回って最終的に引っ張ってくれたフィリピン大学にお願いすることを決めました。

宿舎はフィリピン大学のキャンパス内のBalay Kalinawに滞在することにしました。ちょっと高いですがインターネットが抜群です。フィリピンではインターネット環境に一番苦労すると言われていたのでとりあえず他を探すのを止めてしばらくいることにしました。
